Waste

We're fostering a culture that reduces, reuses, and recycles waste by partnering with suppliers who share our vision. And we're making great strides by working to reduce packaging, enable recovery and reuse of discarded materials, and recycle waste to create raw materials for other purposes.

Waste On The Move
Two Million Disposables Diverted from Landfills with Reusable To-Go Container Program

College students returning to campus this fall will find a new addition to their list of campus essentials: a reusable to-go food container for use at the campus dining hall. ARAMARK Higher Education will introduce the Green Thread ™ to-go container program at many of the campuses it serves, diverting more than two million disposables from landfills during the 2009-2010 school year. Working Toward Zero Waste

ARAMARK is working with its campus partners to incorporate Zero Waste practices - the process of safely recycling all materials back into nature or the marketplace in a manner that protects human health and the environment - into their sustainability plans. Programs include tray-less dining, composting, recycling and implementing reusable utensils and packaging. Several ARAMARK campus partners have already made commitments to Zero Waste practices, including Portland State University, the University of Florida, Baylor University, Brandeis University, Salem College, Elon University and many more. Saluting Our Campus Recycling Partners

This year, over 140 campus partners recycled almost 12 million pounds of waste (paper, corrugated cardboard, bottles and cans, and food service organics) in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) WasteWise RecycleMania program. Read more.

Awareness + Education = Action at ODU

In order to find how much food was getting wasted at Old Dominion University's Café 1201, students participated in an interesting test. For two hours during lunch at the café - one of ARAMARK's busiest residential dining facilities - students scraped their plates into the trash before returning their trays. The results were eye-opening! Read more.
