The 2009 ARAMARK Building Community Tour began in San Antonio, TX in early April and in just over three months reached six US cities and made a successful international debut in London, where on June 5 more than 100 volunteers turned out to help at the "Arc in the Park," a play facility in East London.

Four hundred gallons of paint, 100 pieces of wood and 6,000 pounds of concrete later, there is still lots of work to be done. When the final nail is hammered in Houston this November, nearly 10,000 ARAMARK employees will have volunteered on service projects and at outreach events in more than 25 cities in the US and Canada.

ARAMARK Building Community, a company-wide community involvement initiative, launched in 2008 to strengthen and support community centers. Since its inception, thousands of ARAMARK volunteers have spruced up community centers in 14 cities around the country and have supported food and clothing drives, as well as career and health fairs in those communities.

Earlier this summer, ARAMARK sponsored an outdoor health and wellness event in Philadelphia in partnership with the Federation of Neighborhood Centers. The event featured the first "ARAMARK Building Community Eat Smart Zone," a nutrition and culinary education area led by ARAMARK chefs from Citizens Bank Park and ARAMARK Healthcare dieticians. These comprehensive nutrition and wellness areas will be a permanent fixture at upcoming health and wellness events across the country and will enhance event participants' awareness and knowledge of strategies for making healthier choices and living healthier lives.

"We were delighted to be the venue for such an extensive health and wellness outreach by some of Philadelphia's most engaged and active professional and advocacy organizations regarding health issues," said Cheryl Weiss, Executive Director of Diversified Community Services, a member agency of the Federation of Neighborhood Centers. "The fair will go a long way toward addressing critical health needs in the Point Breeze community."

The first ARAMARK-sponsored Workforce Readiness Fair also took place in Houston in May, when more than 100 students participated in workshops on asset identification and multiple intelligence to determine what works for their individual futures. Later in the summer, "ARAMARK Building Community Career Education Zones" also debuted at ARAMARK sponsored Workforce Readiness Fairs nationwide. These hubs of activity featured ARAMARK human resources professionals and representatives from regional Staffing Centers sharing curriculum and programs to help people obtain, retain and gain employment.
