STAGES Program at USF provides training, careers and hope

One of the most rewarding programs provided by ARAMARK on the University of South Florida campus is Successful Transition After Graduation for Exceptional Students (STAGES).

This special partnership between the Hillsborough county school district and the Department of Special Education at USF provides young adults with meaningful job-training experience and the help they need to find employment.

So far, STAGES is a huge success. Everyone is raving about it!

Ms. Slavin, parent of a STAGES student said, "Since my daughter's involvement with STAGES, Traci has learned to live independently with a roommate, maintain a job at Subway and budget her own money. Thank you to all the dedicated people who are involved with this wonderful program."

Since the program began in 2004, ARAMARK's exemplary managers and employees have not only provided valuable on-the- job training in food and customer service, they've also provided careers to many young adults in the STAGES program. ARAMARK has job trained 25 STAGES students, hired 11 of them and four of those students have worked approximately four years.

Kelli, a STAGES student said, "Fresh Food Company was my first job. I enjoyed and learned a lot working there. Lesley Davis was great to work for. She is a very pleasant boss and always upbeat."

Jodi Rivera, Location Manager at USF Dining Services said, "Kevin Weekes worked for me at the Bull's Den Café for a couple of years. He matured a lot during that time, and became a real member of the morning team. I was delighted to literally run into him at the Publix in Britton Plaza. He told me he worked there and that he had really enjoyed working for me while a student at USF. He thanked me for helping him be a better employee. The pleasure was all mine."

Sam, a STAGES student said, "I job trained at Ben and Jerry's for only a few weeks. I loved working with the employees there. My experience was very interesting; I learned how to do the cash register there. I stocked food on the shelves. I learned how to make smoothies for the customers. My supervisor's name is Effie, She helped me out a lot when I needed it and so did Sarah. I loved my training there. I have to say, it was my second favorite job training position. Chad was my boss and he is a great guy to work for. When he needed help with stocking, I always loved to help. My favorite day there was free ice cream day!! We had a lot of customers who wanted a scoop of ice cream. I will miss working there and hopefully I will be missed!"
