USF Surf Club Donates a Record-Setting Amount of Food To Those In Need

The USF Surf Club and USF Dining Services provider, ARAMARK, have always had a tradition of giving back to the local community and helping those in need. In 2007, USF Dining Services asked for a group on campus to help with food drives and to also volunteer to help give away ice cream cones during Ben & Jerry's "Free Scoop Day." USF Surf Club answered the call and, in April of 2009, raised $140 and 408lbs of non-perishable food to be given to Metropolitan ministries to give to those in need. The following December, USF Surf Club gained more support from USF Dining and raised 300lbs of food for the holiday season.

Since 2007, the pounds of canned goods donated have continued to increase and this year, USF Dining and the Surf Club strove to break the record. They once again joined with Ben & Jerry's support of ONE.org, collecting donations while promoting the organizations goal to "Make Poverty History." In April, fellow surfers came together to give away free scoops of ice cream at the Ben & Jerry's location on campus. Surfers rallied students to bring canned goods to help the cause and also stormed the halls of dorms to gain the help of fellow students in the can collection.

With the help of fellow students and USF Dining, the Surf Club hit a new record, collecting and donating an incredible 742lbs of food to Metropolitan Ministries. At the end of the day in April, 2009, USF Dining Services/ARAMARK and the Surf Club raised a whopping $103, which went to buy canned food for Metropolitan Ministries.

"There is no limit to what we can do," said Surf Club President Crystal Price, "People are eager to help and we will raise even more money and canned goods next year." The 2009 Surf Club Executive Board is already planning the next canned food drive and plans to break the last record with the help of USF Dining and fellow USF students.
