Happy 40th BearthDay!

Happy 40th BearthDay! Happy 40th BearthDay!

Seminole Dining celebrated Earth Day on March 24, 2010 with many other organizations on the Florida State University's Union Green. Several tables were prepared with sustainable initiatives implemented by Seminole Dining to aid informing students and faculty of ways we are using compostable containers, reducing waste by recycling, practicing energy conservation, and much more.

The most popular effort is the official FSU refill cup that can be purchased at any of our locations and it gives a discounted refill price of $0.99 for fountain drinks and drip coffee at all our restaurants. The newest project is reusable to-go containers at both our dining halls. Even though the current to-go containers are biodegradable, we are attempting to reduce the 3,000 containers used on a weekly basis by allowing students to check out a reusable container. We will wash, clean, and sanitize them through our dishwashers when the student exchanges their used container for a clean one. All we ask of the students is a $3 refundable deposit for the initial container and they may choose to no longer participate at any time throughout the semester to receive their deposit back.

In theme with Earth Day, two managers from Suwannee Room and Fresh Food Company prepared fresh Pico de Gallo with tortilla chips along with Pecan Pesto Hummus on Pita Chips. These snacks were prepared fresh on one of our tables at the event. The produce was purchased from Adams Brothers Produce (a local purveyer) and sourced from Thomasville and Quincy area farmers. Addition to participating in FSU's Earth Day event, our Suwannee Room and Fresh Food Company served earth friendly meals all day at each of their stations. Our Park Avenue Diner held the annual "Dine in the Dark" event a few days following Earth Day.
