Earth Hour's Dine in the Dark

Earth Hour's Dine in the Dark

Seminole Dining hosted their second annual "Dine in the Dark" event at the Park Avenue Diner on March 27, 2010. This event was to support the World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour in which hundreds of millions of people around the world turned off their lights for an hour of the day.

Since "Earth Hour is just one step in an ongoing conservation and continual effort toward a more sustainable world,"1 the menu consisted of locally purchased food. It was a buffet dinner that nearly 150 students attended and played a part in this year's Earth Hour. They enjoyed the change in atmosphere of dining in the dark (except kitchen) between 8p.m. - 10p.m. and also learning how Earth Hour is bringing awareness of climate change to nearly a billion people around the world.

On Florida State University, Seminole Dining continues to be more sustainable in their operations and encourages their customers on sustainable practices. The most popular campaign is the Official FSU Refill Cup which was introduced two years ago and our newest initiative is our reusable to-go containers at our residential dining halls. Along with these programs and many others, we are hoping to reduce waste and inform our customers of how they can do their part in making future healthier.
