Yvette Rincon, Barry Larson and Angela Callahan (left to right) serve up friendly smiles to the students and faculty who frequent The Labyrinth Student Lounge every day.

Many students often go to the lounge in order to procure such necessities as are warranted by life at the university: coffee, for example. But this habit, which is a daily one for many, could easily grow lifeless and perfunctory (as, surely, it often does in lesser places) if not for the cheerful assistance of the man and women who work there: Barry Larson, Angela Callahan and Yvette Rincon.

It is not shocking that they recognize students as they come in. In fact, they make an effort to get to know the orders of their "regular" customers.

"We talk to them. We get to know them. We help them with any problems if there are any," Callahan said. "We're like a big family here. Most of them we know by their names, and we know their orders."

It is not only students who receive these benefits either, for they are just as friendly with the faculty members who come in.

"The faculty - we're the same way with them. We know them by their names, and we know their orders. So they come in, and we put a smile on their faces. We joke with them," Callahan said. The helpfulness of the workers in The Lounge does not stop there. They will also go out of their way to help each customer find what he needs and to explain alternatives if what they are looking for isn't available. They will even be happy to place a special order if necessary.

"We try to please the students, and there are a lot of groceries, medicines and snacks," Rincon said. "If we don't carry them, and they ask for them, we try to please their needs."

Despite all of this care and conversation, they do not lose sight of the fact that many of their patrons have to work with tight schedules.

"I think they're a great help to the school and to us because we're always in a rush," said UST senior Kevin Valdez as he paid for his speedily-prepared order.

What is the secret of all this success? They seem to think that it is not only on account of their good relationship with the people who come in, but also their ability to work together that they are able to create a positive atmosphere.

"Yvette, Barry and I - we get along great. We work as a team," Callahan said. "We have no problems with each other, and that's good because we're like a family. We get along with everyone. [Our] work is more efficient, and everyone can tell."
